Ward Street Saltboxes, Salem City

1989: The City of Salem offered two c. 1849 saltbox-style houses on Ward Street to Salem County Habitat for Humanity.

October 1992: Salem County Habitat for Humanity prepared to demolish two historic saltbox houses on Ward Street in Salem. Action by PSI and the City of Salem averted the demolition of the two c. 1849 saltbox-style houses.

November 1992: A PSI member and a Habitat for Humanity board member protested the destruction decision at Habitat's November meeting.

September 1994: The City of Salem decided to demolish both saltbox duplexes.

December 1994: Demolition was again put on hold after a coalition between Habitat and Preservation Salem, Incorporated intervened. At present, the two buildings are still standing but with no plans for their future rehabilitation.
