February 17, 1990: T.E. Warren, Inc. moved the Telegraph Building from North Bend Hose Co. on Front Street in Salem to Fogg's gas station property on Grant Street. The process to organize Preservation Salem, Incorporated was begun that afternoon.
June 1990: Preservation Salem, Incorporated received a $1,500 grant from the Salem County Cultural & Heritage Commission for cedar roofing shingles. The building was scraped. Paint samples were taken. PSI asked Freeholders about leasing their lot on Grant Street. August 1992: PSI made a formal presentation to Freeholders requesting use of the county lot on Grant Street. December 1992: PSI applied to ISTEA program for $ 57,000 for restoration funds. | ||
| February 1993: PSI submitted a grant application to the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Preservation Services Fund for $ 1,500 to fund Historic Structure Report.
April 1993: ISTEA grant denied. County property Block 27, Lot 5, at 185 Grant Street, was conveyed to PSI. Freeholder Ben Simmermon sponsored the action. Salem Oak Title donated a title search. June 1993: National Trust for Historic Preservation's Preservation Services Fund awarded $ 700 to PSI. November 1993: The City of Salem granted property tax exemption. Holly Boyer of Watson & Henry Associates completed Historic American Buildings Survey drawings. February 1994: PSI applied to NJ Historical Commission for $ 8,000 grant to complete a Historic Structure Report. April 1994: PSI submitted a site plan to Salem Planning Board, with help from John Ford Evans, Esq. The design work was donated by Watson & Henry Associates. The plan was determined incomplete. Telegaph Building was moved onto the Grant Street lot by T.E. Warren, Inc. The NJ Historic Commission denied PSI's grant request. May 1994: Allen M. Kammerer, Inc., Consulting Engineers, Pennsville completed an Exidsting Conditions Survey, at a cost of $600. September 1994: Geotech, Inc., Consulting Soils and Foundation Engineers, completed Geotechnical Investigation at a cost of $ 1,900. City Water & Sewer Dept. donated backhoe. Grant application for $1,400 was submitted to Salem County Cultural & Heritage Commission Block Grant program for the preparation of a Preservation Plan. January 1995: Salem County Cultural & Heritage Commission awarded $ 1,400 to PSI for preparation of a Preservation Plan. April 1995: Westfield Architects and Preservation Consultants completed the Preservation Plan at a cost of $ 2,500; $ 2,000 of pro bono work was included. August 1995: The Telegraph Building was scraped and primed. Additional paint samples were taken. January 1996: NJ Historic Preservation Office certified Telegraph Building for NJ and National Registers of Historic Places. Grant application for $28,379 from the NJ Historic Preservation Bond Program was submitted to the NJ Historic Trust. February 1996: Dr. Robert Brooks, PSI Director, launched fundraising campaign. July 1996: NJ Historic Preservation Bond grant was denied due to insufficient matching funds in-hand. March 1997: Application for Site Plan was approval submitted to Salem City Planning Board, prepared by attorney Maria Vanneman, R.N. and architect Michael Westfield, R.A. April 1997: Site Plan approved. December 1997: PSI received a building permit for foundation construction. May 1998: Bids were received for foundation work. July 1998: Foundation construction was completed. November 2003: The first order of engraved bricks was placed in front of building. August 2004: A new brick sidewalk replaced the worn, broken concrete sidewalk. A grass strip was added the between sidewalk and the street. October 2005: PSI applied for a Site Management Grant from the NJ Historic Trust; pending approval by the Garden State Preservation Trust and the New Jersey State Legislature. November-December 2005: Building to be straightened; columns, doors and windows installed; roof replaced. November 2006: The Delaware River and Bay Authority granted $ 5,000 for work on the Telegraph Building. | |||
